The
Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park has been designated by the Vietnamese
Authorities as the location of a new Deep-Sea Port complementary
to the existing Saigon Port. This port will be equipped with deep
draught quays comprising a combined cargo terminal, a container
terminal, a dry bulk terminal and liquid bulk terminals.
The
drought of the berths along the quay will be sufficient for fully
laden 25,000 dwt ships at the inception of the project. The design
will however allow easy adaptation to accommodate 50,000 dwt vessels
in the further development phases.
Improved
Shipping Access from the Sea to
Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park
The
Soai Rap River is naturally the largest and widest channel from
the sea to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly, it was also the main shipping
access to Saigon Port, the existing largest port of Vietnam. However,
due to formation of a sand bar at the river mouth, lack of maintenance
dredging and security reasons during wartime, the shipping channel
was moved to the Long Tau River. This route however is not practical
since it has a lot of bends and it is much narrower and longer than
the access via the Soai Rap River (63 kms vs. 50 kms long).
The
initial aim is to allow controlled access to the Hiep Phuoc Industrial
Park for vessels of up to 25,000 dwt. This will be done by creating
an interim access channel northwards from Hiep Phuoc to the Long
Tau River which is the existing shipping access channel. This will
immediately give the Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park the same accessibility
as Saigon Port. At a later stage the access channel to the sea via
the Soai Rap River will be deepened to allow for a maximum size
of vessels of 50,000 dwt.
